Direct byproduct of being neurodivergent and growing up isolated from your peergroup is having no idea when it’s appropriate to define someone as your friend

Is this person I met yesterday my friend? What about this person I’ve been talking to every day for three months? What about this person I’ve known since middle school? Is friend a title I have to earn? What are the limits of friendship? Is it a static state, make-or-break, or is it some endless dance-dance-revolution style cavalcade of prompts and challenges and social cues I have to hit perfectly to keep it up? Does it bend? Does it break? I don’t fucking know man I just work here.

i still remember when the dude doing my autism assessment asked me how many friends I had, and I was like “okay but how are we defining friendship?” and he just like, stared at me for a second and then wrote down some notes

ao3demographicssurvey2023:

Hey everyone!

This is the next in our series of pilot surveys for the AO3 Demographics Survey 2023 - an independent research project about the demographics and behaviours of AO3 users, which is planning to launch later this year. (Please note that we are in no way officially endorsed by or affiliated with AO3!)

The purpose of our pilot surveys is to seek feedback about which questions should be included, the best phrasing of questions, and similar design concerns. This survey focuses on questions from the “Fandom Behaviour” section of the survey, which is about how people participate in fandom beyond their use of AO3 itself.

If you are willing to give feedback, we estimate the survey will take about 15 minutes. No data collected as part of this survey will be included in the final project; it is for survey design purposes only.

This pilot survey will run for about a week, or until we have received 500 responses, whichever happens first. Signal boosts are appreciated. Thank you!

Remembering the time my old nb roommate who went to an LGBT law conference and was heaping the absolute biggest bitchfit texting me cause “some cis guy” was talking about trans people and trans men in particular and my roommate refused to listen to what this guy said cause “why should I listen to him” and I said “are you sure he’s cis?” And then towards the end of the presentation he said something that indicated to the crowd he was a trans man and then suddenly my roommate started to consider what had been shared.

Absolute loser behavior, but not completely unique. We’ve all gotta stop saying only x people can talk about x issues for us to listen. Too many people in the in group will have dogshit takes no one wants to challenge because “well, they are x identity.” Likewise, plenty of people on the out group actually know what they’re talking about and have something to contribute to the conversation.

Especially when it comes to sexuality and gender, you relying on someone outing themselves or you clocking them to decide whether their words have merit is shitty, because you won’t always know if they ARE the group “allowed” to talk about it. And even beyond that, I knew a fuckload about transness before I realized I was trans, it helped me REALIZE I was trans. “Listen to x voices” got sooooo warped in the discourse.

I’m happy to see that “the place I was raised has an ideal climate and every other climate sucks” is such a universal human tendency
